Granitic inselberg erosion controlled by dike swarm array in semiarid Brazil

Numerous inselbergs rise above the regional erosional surface in semiarid northeastern Brazil. The are underlain by Quixadá Pluton and cut cm-thick granite dike swarms. Five with abundant dikes from two different parts of pluton were selected to investigate role patterns evolution residual topography, including morphological features hillslopes. methods included field mapping landforms, structural measurements accessible arrays, rock strength determinations using a Schmidt hammer. Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) photogrammetry was used build detailed digital models recognize geometric arrays. In addition, >30 samples collected determine composition evaluate their resistance weathering. results show that >60 % display sub-horizontal array composed low- medium-angle (up 45° dip), which tend increase rock-mass resistance, providing effective barriers against weathering vertical fracturing, associated most prominent, steep-sided hills. Besides, swarm geometry controls slope outlines some inselbergs, commonly conform attitudes. By contrast, steeply-dipping (>60° dip) promote along dike-host interface hypothesized underlie plains between inselbergs. At small scale, control occurrence minor landforms such as pans, solution runnels, overhangs, split boulders. Our findings erosion is not homogeneous granitic but controlled local factors dip.
